Causes Of Attrition In Wear Liners

By Brian Burns

Machines and other parts of equipment wear out when exposed to continuous usage. To confirm that these machines are working efficiently, there is need for proper maintenance. The life of the machinery can also be prolonged through constant maintenance services. Wear liners are used on different parts of a machine to ensure that the parts are protected from weakening.

Though there are different methods of lubrication, it might not be enough especially when machines are subjected to continuous use. These methods are getting better every day. Once a liner wears out, it is essential to replace it with a better one. Some sectors of certain equipment can wear off fast if they are not protected well. This article has discussed several reasons why the liner can reduce efficiency.

Friction a leading causes of inefficiency in machines. It occurs between two surfaces that are moving adjacent to or against each other. The magnitude of resistance can be determined by the temperature of the area in use, the kind of materials in contact and the velocity of the movement. More friction leads to more wear.

Abrasion is another cause of weakening in linings. In case there is presence of small particles between these moving parts, the liner can be weakened. Machines that have combustion spaces experience this common problem. Particles produced in this part lead to scuffing of the layers in contact. When these particles are not eliminated in good time, they can be destructive. Machine owners should confirm that such areas are cleaned frequently to avoid abrasion.

In machines that support burning of heavy fuels, corrosion is likely to occur. During combustion, there is production of sulphur. When this content is in a large amount, it leads to production of sulphuric acid in the presence of water or moisture inside the incineration space. Once this acid is formed, there is corrosion that weakens the materials near this place. However, the problem can be avoided by using an alkaline to neutralize the acidity.

Some metals are shiny when new. However, this appearance changes with time as the metal is used. When abrasion occurs due to continuous usage, this roughness wears the lining away. It is caused by inadequate lubrication between the colliding metals. The inadequacy is as a result of high level of heating inside the machine. With this, the liner becomes ineffective and the life of a machine is shortened.

When there are irregularities between linings and pistons, there is creation of minor marks on the liner surface. These marks resemble those formed through abrasion. The marks are formed when the lubricant oil is not enough between the two surfaces in operation. Tearing occurs on the protection layer and the surface of the piston. Though this may not be destructive, it can affect the machine if not rectified in good time.

These are some of the main reasons why a liner may not serve the purpose in the correct way. The ability of a coating can be appreciated by ensuring that maintenance is done regularly. Since the coating is exposed to higher amounts of friction and corrosion than the parts in protection, proper maintenance is necessary.
