Crucial Facts About The Cooling Fan Assembly In A Car

By Donna Kennedy

It is not common to see a car owner bother to learn about the technical aspects of his automobile. The truth, however, is that there are lots of useful facts that can make you a better driver if you choose to learn them. With knowledge and skill, fixing unforeseen mechanical issues when traveling will be easy. This article discuses the interesting history of the cooling fan assembly, its versions, purpose and what to do to get a genuine replacement.

The primary purpose of this important component is to lower the temperature of the engine in a car. When being driven, heat flowing from a car engine is regulated by a coolant as it passes through the radiator. A fan blows cold air through the heated components and the radiator, thereby decreasing the internal temperature. The process takes place over and over as the air re flows into the engine.

Thanks to rapid advancement in the development of vehicle technology, several versions of assemblies are available. The earliest versions are the manual ones. A manual system is powered using an engine crankshaft and works like a pulley. Once the engine is turned on, the fans start functioning.

After the introduction of manual versions, clutch based assemblies came into operation. A clutch system can either be thermal or non thermal. The latter utilizes a water pump connection to the clutch. The speed of the engine is what determines how the clutch system engages.

On the other hand, thermal clutch systems use bi metallic springs that serve as thermostats. These springs control the amount of coolant flowing through the entire system. At unsustainably high temperatures, the springs disengage and allow cold air to cool the overheating components.

Today, there are vehicles that come with electric cooling systems. When being driven, these vehicles generate electricity that helps to control thermal sensors. Their coolers are usually small sized. The placement position for the system is at the back or front of the radiator. An electric system pushes or pulls air depending on its position.

Vehicle components are largely known to wear off with time. Depending on how old your car is, the blades in its fan may begin to bend. If this is the case, its radiator may begin getting an excess or insufficient amount of air. Thermal sensors suffer the same degradation in the course of time. What is more, a faulty clutch may result in the confinement and release of the coolant inappropriately.

If your vehicle has these problems, you should set some time aside to take it for repair. Most mechanically skilled automobile owners like to do their own repairs. The safest thing to do for those who take this step is to begin by turning off their engines. You should also ensure the spare parts you purchase from your dealership are original.

Manufacturers always serialize their products so as to minimize the risks of counterfeiting. For this reason, ensure the components you buy from your dealership have traceable serial numbers. Lastly, remember to only use parts that are designated for your car model.
