It was through replacement of a less powerful engine with a more powerful one that engine modification was done. Also, for the engine to perform better, it was tuned in some cases. Wheels underwent modification to provide better traction and handling.
After World War II, most military airports were left unused. Therefore, a good ground for hot rodders to race on was provided by them. However, some racers took some action to the streets instead of staying on the airport. This caused a major safety problem which necessitated the formation of the National Hot Rod Association. The body was accountable for ensuring standards and safety in the cars and racers.
In later years, manufacturers of cars started to make cars that had better performance. This led to a reduction in interest in hot rods since people could purchase muscle cars straight from showrooms. However, later in 1973, manufacturers started to focus more on fuel efficiency because of the Oil Crisis. This led to the birth of the street rods, modified cars not intended for racing.
