Pavement markings are designed to provide important information and communication to motorists and pedestrians as they use the road system. The markings are usually done following specific standards and regulations set and enforced by local, state, and federal governments. How long the markings will stay on the pavement can also be determined by the type of surface to be painted. The bonding characteristic of marking materials is highly affected by surfaces made of Portland cement concrete and hot mix asphalt. This proves that the surface can affect how the material bonds and thus affecting how long it can last. How long the markings will last is also influenced greatly by the volume of traffic experienced by the area. Deterioration rate is directly proportional to the amount of traffic.

The Department of Transportation has approved several materials to be used to mark pavements. Some of the most commonly used materials are epoxy, polyuria, water-based paint, preformed plastic, thermoplastic, and modified urethane among others. These materials also exist in more than one formulation in some cases. Every formulation must however be approved for use by the DOT. Some of these materials are also compatible with each other while others are not.

In case of re-striping, it is important for the material used to be compatible with the already existing one. If not, then the existing materials must be scrapped completely before re-striping is done. To achieve expected service life, certain conditions must exist during the installation process. There are several factors that must be observed. The major ones are material application rate, wind velocity, pavement surface condition, pavement surface moisture, material temperature, ambient temperature, and pavement temperature among others.
