Locating A Firm For Ecu Repair

By Carl Campbell

Modern vehicles will have an electronic box called an engine control unit which controls different functions. From time to time these units will fail and will need fixing so that the vehicle can be used properly. When you are trying to find a company for ecu repair there are a few options available and it is important that you get the work done by qualified technicians.

The ECU on your car is a vital piece of kit and when it stops working the car will not run efficiently and will need to be taken off the road. The components in the box control various things such as the fuel and air mix, water temperature and the variable valve timings. The box will also communicate with other major components such as cruise control systems, transmission and traction control.

A new ECU from a car manufacturer is a very expensive item and having one repaired is the most cost effective option. Many companies can be found that will rectify faults with these units and some homework is needed. Always use a well established firm that has skilled technicians and one that will cover the work with a warranty.

The majority of control units can be repaired unless the problem is so severe that repairs are not going to be cost effective. Older units or the ones fitted to rare cars may take longer to fix as some parts may have to be ordered from overseas. Modern units can be fixed fairly fast and the price you are charged will be reasonable.

The internet is probably the best place to find a company that will take your faulty piece of equipment and fix it. You will need to log onto their web site, and input your vehicles details, which is a fairly simple process. If they can do the work on that particular unit they will give you a price and arrange to have your unit collected by a courier.

It is advisable to contact a few firms to ask for price quotes so that you can compare prices. You will have to carefully package and label the unit before the collection driver picks it up. It is important that the package is insured for its full replacement value in case it is damaged or lost in transit.

The work on your unit will not usually take too long and it will depend on what is wrong with it, hours required to fix it and how busy the technicians are. When the fault is fixed, your unit will be sent back to you, and you can put it back in the car and test it. Make sure that you keep the payment receipt for the repairs and the guarantee paperwork that is issued in case a fault occurs.

Searching your local area may also produce results and you may have a local company that can fix your ECU. You can then simply drop the unit off at the factory and collect it when the work has been done. You can also find companies that advertise in car magazines, local newspapers and on leaflets and posters around town.
