Things To Think About With Wire Wheels

By Margaret Fox

One of the cheapest and most effective ways to enhance the appearance of a car is to fit new wheels. Many vehicles will be supplied with steel or alloys and fitting a set of aftermarket rims can improve its looks. There are many firms available that can supply you with wire wheels and there are a few things to be considered before you buy.

For the most cars, these rims can be brought off the shelf in many car parts retailers in your neighborhood. There are many options to choose from and you will find something that suits most vehicles. You will also find wire rims offered for sale on the internet and these retailers will usually have huge stocks that are ready to be shipped.

A lot of people choose to buy a second hand set of rims and this can save you some money. They can be found for around two hundred dollars per set and are to be found in many junk yards and garages. Some of the pre owned sets may need a little refurbishment and there are companies that can powder coat them to give a good finish.

At the top end of the market you can buy a handmade set of wire rims for your vehicle. Depending on the size, style and number of spokes, they will start from a couple of thousand dollars per set, increasing in price according to finish and manufacturer. The spinners or centers used to secure the wheel can also be made to a unique design.

When you opt to buy and fit a set of new wheels it is recommended that you do a research before purchasing. You will need to check that there is enough clearance for larger rims and some modifications may be required to the bodywork. Other items such as suspension and brake systems may also need some adjustment depending on the model of car.

When you fit a new set of rims, it is important to check that the appropriate tools are also purchased and kept in the car. Many will have a spinner or single nut to secure the wheel and the original tools supplied with your vehicle may not fit. Many of the suppliers can provide these tools when you are purchasing rims but you should check beforehand.

After care is also a major thing to consider when deciding to upgrade and change over to wire rims. Washing can be a laborious task and will take much longer than cleaning a standard steel or alloy wheel. Soft toothbrushes and old rags can be used for the inaccessible areas where pressure washer will not reach. You will also need to remove the rims at some point to inspect and clean behind to avoid any corrosion.

Before you buy any new wheels, it is worth consulting a qualified mechanic to make sure any modifications to your vehicle are properly carried out. If you are purchasing online, be mindful that you may not get the after sales care that is often provided by a local retailer. It can be worth retaining your original rims in case you decide to sell the car or trade it at a later date.
